Résumé Grading
Within the context of applying for a job with a top-tier employer, for example a leading investment bank, a score of 50 or less is weak, 60 is almost-but-not-quite good enough, a score of 70 would be reasonably likely to get you interviewed, and 85 would almost certainly get you interviewed. Note that it is highly unlikely that anyone could score maximum points.

Perceived Quality of University - 10 (Scale of 1-10, with 10 for the #1 Times-ranked university, and 1 for the bottom ranked college. For example, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Standford, Oxford or Cambridge = 10, Imperial, LSE, Warwick, Kings, UCL = 8, Bristol, Durham = 7, Sheffield Hallam = 3, Westminster = 2).

Perceived Quality of University or College (scale of 1 – 10):

 

High School Grades: A-levels, SATs, International Baccalaureate or international equivalent - 20 (Scale of 1-20, excluding general studies, where AAAAA = 20, AAA = 15, AAB = 12, ABB = 9, BBB = 7, EEE = 1).

A-Level or equivalent (scale of 1 - 20) :

 

Undergraduate Degree - 10 (1st Class = 10, 3rd = 0, 2/1 = 3, 2/2 = 1).

Undergraduate Degree (scale of 1 - 10) :

 

Postgraduate degree - 20 (Top 20 Business School MBA degree = 20, British PhD = 6, Medical postgraduate (eg. MRCS) = 6, Masters = 3

Postgraduate Degree (scale of 1 – 20) :

 

Achievements, Positions of Responsibility - 25 (Scale of 1-5 for each of up to maximum of 5 achievements, giving a potential maximum of 25 points. Even if there are more examples, points will only be given for 5 since employers will not focus on any more and judge you on the most impressive).
5 = "Wow - this achievement is amazing and truly unique. Few could have done this!
4 = "Very good. That's really impressive and a cut above the other candidates"
3 = "Good. That genuinely differentiates this candidate from the other resumes I looked at."
2 = "The usual stuff - society official, organised a social event, captained a sports team, class representative"
1 = "This does not really impress me. Other students mention similar things."

Achievements, Positions of Responsibility (scale of 1 – 25) :

 

Other Data - 5 (Scale of 1-5. This is personal stuff about you that makes you sound like an interesting person to meet. This includes all hobbies, interests, sports that are not achievements as such, just things that you do).
"5 = Wow - I would love to meet this person. He/she sound like one of a kind!
"4 = Very, very interesting. This person might be fun to meet."
"3 = Quite interesting. This person participates in a variety of interesting things."
"2 = Not bad. At least I can picture what the person is like from this section."
"1 = The usual garbage. Watch movies, cook, read, and worst of all - likes to travel!"

Other Data (scale of 1 – 5) :

 

Undergraduate or postgraduate Degree subject - 5 (Scale of 1-5, with a 5 for a degree that is relevant to the job available. For example, an accounting degree would get a 5 for a job in Assurance, whilst a degree with no direct bearing on the job would get a 1)

Undergraduate or Postgraduate Degree Subject (scale of 1 – 5) :

 

Work Experience - 20 (Scale of 1-5 for the quality of each employer and work experience, for up to 4 jobs or internships, giving a potential maximum of 20 points.). This score will vary according to the job sought. Working as a database developer would get 5 for a web development job, but 1 for an equity sales job. Examples are below:
"5 = Summer internship with Deutsche Bank Investment Banking Division, etc"
"4 = Placement with KPMG Tax, internship with Morgan Stanley Operations, etc"
"3 = I know this company. The work experience sounds quite good."
"2 = Never heard of this company but the work experience looks pretty decent."
"1 = McDonalds, Boots, My University Department"

Work Experience (scale of 1 – 20) :

 

IT Skills - 5 (Scale of 1-5, with Microsoft Office 1, and C++ programming 5, provided more details are provided to convince employer you genuinely have this skill level. An IT professional or student would almost certainly get a 5, plus further points within Work Experience if applying for an IT job)

IT Skills (scale of 1 – 5):

 

Languages - 24 (6 for fluency in first European Union language, 5 for the second and 4 for the third. 2 for fluency in first non-EU language, and 2 for the second. No marks for conversational ability. If you speak German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch or French you get 10 instead of 6 marks for your first EU language. No marks for speaking English, which is a prerequisite)

Languages (scale of 1 – 24) :

 

Foreign travel - 1 (Just to confirm that employers are not impressed by foreign travel since everyone does it)

Foreign Travel (Max of 1) :

 

Work authorisation - 5 (Employers continue to discriminate against people with no work permits. If you are applying for UK/EU jobs, score 5 for European Union citizenship or if you are able to remain in the UK indefinitely. If you are applying for US jobs, score 5 for US citizenship or if you are able to remain in the US indefinitely. No marks for any other status).

Work Authorisation (scale of 1 to 5) :

 

Presentation. Succinct, easy to grasp points - 6 (Scale of 1-6 because good presentation implies attention to detail and diligence. This is easy to get right, and if you get less than 5, you should be concerned!
